Photo & Quote #18 Solstice

Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love.
~Hamilton Wright Mabi

My dad has the best ornaments on his Christmas tree.

This gorilla from the San Diego Zoo is maybe my favorite of all.

Porter woke up sick today, which meant sitting around and being chill. Here he’s playing iSpy with the flashlight.

Porter and his uncles Steve and Kumar. So sweet!
Meet Boma, a Hindu security god, of sorts. My parents have Boma in various places through their home and Porter has taken a real interest in him and his ability to “scare monsters”. Porter won’t, however, touch this statue. Can you blame him?

Photo & Quote #17 Sea

If you want to build a ship,
don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work,
but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.
~Antoine de Saint-Exupery

A quick photo to show you the difference in pastured butter (top),
from cows that get to eat grass regularly,
and non-pastured butter (bottom). Yellow is better!

And in Porter’s 12 Trucks of Christmas, we present the dump truck.

Photo & Quote #16 Morning

Probably the happiest period in life most frequently is in middle age,
when the eager passions of youth are cooled,
and the infirmities of age not yet begun;
as we see that the shadows,
which are at morning and evening so large,
almost entirely disappear at midday.

In case you’ve never had good fruitcake, like myself, let me assure you that it does indeed exist.
My dad used this recipe from Alton Brown for a dense and delicious treat. Read the reviews, they’re great.
Trying to catch dust particles in the morning light.

Photo & Quote #15 Moon

We all shine on, like the moon, and the stars, and the sun.
~John Lennon

Whoops, missed a couple days. We were in travel mode for our Xmas trip to visit the grandparents.

Paradise.

Quality time in the kitchen with Pop-pop.

Fruit cake tasting with 4 different cakes.
The three on the left are from around the country and the one on the right is my dads.
His won! I had no idea fruit cake could be so good.

Dancing to Xmas songs with Tutu

It takes an extraordinary amount of focus and attention to get the train over the bridge and to stay on track. Whew.

10+ feet of holiday spirit.

Loves truck.

Photo & Quote #14 Autumn

a wind has blown the rain away and blown the sky away and all the leaves away,
and the trees stand.
i think, i too, have known autumn too long.
~e.e. cummings
I’m ready for my California Christmas.

The nice part of having a small child is their ability to search for lost toys under the couch.

Having a dance party to xmas music.

We went to the park today and it was FREEZING.
Still, so much fun for the boy.

Photo & Quote #13 Loss

At the temple there is a poem called “Loss” carved into the stone.
It has three words, but the poet has scratched them out.
You cannot read loss, only feel it.

No special photo today, just a montage of parents loving their kid.
Group hug.

Tell your kids you love them, hug and kiss them too. Every. Single. Day.

Me and my dad.

How grateful I am to have had the loving and safe childhood of my memories.

Photo & Quote #12 Eggs*

I myself prefer my New Zealand eggs for breakfast.
~Elizabeth II

I think one of the terrible things today is that people have this deathly fear of food:
fear of eggs say, or fear of butter.
Most doctors feel you can have a little bit of everything.
~Julia Child

I was eating in a Chinese restaurant downtown.
There was a dish called Mother and Child reunion.
It’s chicken and eggs. I said, I gotta use that one.
~Paul Simon

*There were so many good egg quotes (who knew) that you get three tonight!
Remains of breakfast for the 3 of us.

Big Kitty, Olive, Misty
These are the pictures that the vet took to keep on file for our cats.
They were given a shout out on Facebook today and I loved it.
I think the vet captured their personalities quite well.

Photo & Post #11 Library!

Everything you need for better future and success has already been written.
And guess what? All you have to do is go to the library.
~Henri Frederic Amiel

A highlight of going to the library with Porter is when he walks around the circulation desk and into the kids section, where we are greeted with this dragon in various costumes and decoration depending on the week. This guy never fails to get a squeal.
